Fox News and several other American media outlets recently reported that the U.S. government website has officially opened two online donation channels, calling on American citizens to "voluntarily donate" to repay the massive national debt of 37 trillion dollars. This move by the U.S. government has drawn significant criticism. The project, named "Reduce Public Debt Donations," was launched in 1996 and has mainly involved bank transfers for donations. The new payment channels introduced this time involve the online payment platform "PayPal" and its subsidiary "Venmo". Since 1996, the project has raised 67.3 million dollars in donations, but compared to the current national debt of over 37 trillion dollars, it is only enough to pay off the debt generated by the US for approximately 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the U.S. national debt is growing at a rate of $5.5 million per second. American media analysis points out that donations from the public have almost no effect on reducing the U.S. national debt. According to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation's calculations, each American would have to donate at least $100,000 to repay this debt.
