In this week's earnings call, Tesla CEO Musk hinted that his company's newly launched robotaxi service will expand to the San Francisco Bay Area and other markets in the United States. However, California regulators have made it clear that Tesla is not authorized to transport passengers on local public roads with autonomous vehicles. The California Public Utilities Commission said in an email on Friday: "Tesla is not allowed to test or transport the public in self-driving cars, with or without a driver. Tesla is allowed to transport the public in non-self-driving cars, of course, with a driver." The commission said it had received a notification from Tesla on Thursday that the company plans to "expand operations" according to its license, providing services to "employees' friends and family as well as selected members of the public" in most areas of the Bay Area. However, the California Public Utilities Commission stated that this service can only be provided with non-self-driving cars according to Tesla's license.
