Tesla plans to launch a Robotaxi service in San Francisco this week.

According to a memo reviewed by Business Insider, Tesla notified employees on Thursday of plans to launch Robotaxi service in San Francisco this weekend. The memo indicated that the launch of Robotaxi has been moved up, with a possible launch as early as Friday. Some Tesla owners will receive invitations to use the service. The memo noted that the geographic coverage for the Robotaxi service includes most areas of the San Francisco Bay Area, including Marin County, most of the East Bay, San Francisco, and as far south as San Jose. Initially, the service will be equipped with safety drivers sitting in the driver's seat. A spokesperson from the California Department of Motor Vehicles stated that they recently met with Tesla, but Tesla has not yet applied for a permit for autonomous testing or deployment. The agency did not respond to whether a permit is required for this service with safety monitors present.
