Shanghai releases the next-generation display industry action plan, focusing on key technology breakthroughs such as Micro LED.
The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization issued the "Action Plan for High-Quality Development of the Next-Generation Display Industry in Shanghai" on July 22, proposing the construction of a "1+2+3+4" industry system. The plan aims to focus on breakthroughs in key technologies such as Micro LED, silicon-based OLED, and flexible displays, with the goal of reaching international advanced levels of industry competitiveness by 2030. The plan specifically mentions the cultivation of at least three leading domestic enterprises and the promotion of innovation in terminal applications such as smart glasses and in-car displays.
In terms of technological research and development, the plan emphasizes support for the mass production of full-color Micro LED microdisplays and the breakthrough of key technologies such as mass pixel transfer. It also aims to accelerate the research and development of silicon-based OLED microdisplays to address industry pain points like the moir effect. According to industry data, global sales of AI smart glasses increased by 216% to 600,000 units in the first quarter of 2025, and annual sales are expected to reach 5.5 million units.
CITIC Securities predicts that the global market size for Mini LED backlight modules will reach 15.6 billion yuan by 2028, while the market size for direct-view displays will reach 34.6 billion yuan. Significant growth is expected in equipment and system segments, with the crystal growth machine market expected to reach 1.7 billion yuan, and the display control system market expected to reach 8.7 billion yuan by 2028.
