Colombian President Petro spoke in Congress, pointing out that a Swiss company and a US-Colombian mining company have violated the ban on exporting coal to Israel. Petro stated that 60% of the coal imported by Israel comes from Colombia, and that this coal could be used to manufacture bombs that harm infants in the Gaza Strip. He emphasized that Colombia cannot be an accomplice to Israel, and plans to use the rights granted by the World Trade Organization treaties to restrict the export activities of the companies involved. Petro had previously criticized Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip multiple times, and in May 2024 announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel, followed by the issuance of the coal export ban decree on August 18.
