The Food Safety Center of the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced on July 21 that in response to a report from the World Organization for Animal Health, stating that a highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza outbreak occurred in the Badajoz province of the Extremadura Autonomous Community in Spain, the center immediately instructed the industry to temporarily suspend the import of poultry meat and poultry products from that region to safeguard public health in Hong Kong. A spokesperson for the center said that according to data from the government statistics department, Hong Kong imported approximately 10 tonnes of chilled poultry meat and around 20,000 poultry eggs from Spain in the first three months of this year.
