Meta Platforms Inc. may once again clash with the European Union as it faces a fine of 200 million euros (232 million U.S. dollars) for failing to meet the strict new digital regulations for Facebook and Instagram. The European Commission has sent a letter to the social media giant warning that Meta's paid or opt-in services - where users can pay for an ad-free experience - need further adjustments. If Meta fails to meet the demands of the European Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera and Digital Policy Commissioner Henna Virkkunen, this procedural step could pave the way for the EU to issue formal warnings and ultimately impose periodic fines. In April, Meta was first fined for violating the Digital Markets Act.
