According to the Smart Finance and Economics APP, on July 15th, Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said during a media meeting before attending the executive meeting that the Transport and Housing Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region submitted legislative proposals to the Legislative Council's Panel on Transport on the same day on regulating the online ride-hailing services. Lam stated that since the first online ride-hailing platform entered the Hong Kong market in 2014, there has been no regulatory system in place. As a result, the quality of taxi services has not met the expectations of the public, leading to issues regarding the safety and security of online ride-hailing vehicles and passengers, insurance, driver qualifications, and how online ride-hailing can coexist with traditional taxis. Although these issues are complex, they should not be further delayed, and the Hong Kong government must come up with solutions.
