White House economic adviser Hassett said on Sunday that if there is evidence to support it, President Trump has the right to dismiss Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, adding that the Fed has "a lot of responsibility" for the excessive cost of renovating its headquarters in Washington. Hassett stated that any decision by Trump to dismiss Powell would largely depend on the Fed's response to the renovation issue. White House budget office director Vought criticized Powell last week for "lying" about the renovations at the Fed building. Trump has repeatedly stated that Powell should resign because he has not lowered interest rates.
