Sudan Rapid Support Forces claim control of an important city in the west.
On July 13th, local time, the Sudan Rapid Support Forces announced that the group had gained control of the important city of Umm Samimah in the West Kordofan state of Sudan. The Rapid Support Forces stated that they had taken control of Umm Samimah from the Sudanese Armed Forces on the same day. The Sudanese Armed Forces did not respond to this claim. Umm Samimah is located in the Kordofan region of western Sudan and is strategically important as it connects the capital city of Khartoum to the western Darfur region through several major transportation routes. Recently, there have been frequent clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in multiple locations in Kordofan, leading to escalating tensions in the area. On April 15, 2023, armed conflict erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in the capital city of Khartoum, spreading to other regions thereafter. The ongoing armed conflict, which has lasted for over two years, has resulted in nearly 30,000 deaths and over 12 million people being displaced.
