On July 12, 2025, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the annual series of East Asia Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meetings in Kuala Lumpur and accepted an interview with Chinese media afterwards. Regarding his meeting with US Secretary of State Rubio during the conference, Wang Yi stated: "It is an international practice to hold bilateral meetings on multilateral occasions. The series of foreign ministers' meetings held in Kuala Lumpur provided a platform for contact between China and the US. Both sides are aware that the China-US relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world today, affecting both countries and the global community. The meeting was constructive, with both sides engaging in equal dialogue based on mutual respect. China comprehensively explained our principles and positions on the China-US relationship, which we believe increased the understanding of the US side towards China and laid the groundwork for the future interactions between the two countries' diplomatic teams. In summary, the meeting focused on strengthening contacts, preventing misjudgments, managing differences, and expanding cooperation. From a historical and global perspective, China and the US indeed have extensive common interests and vast scope for cooperation. It is the responsibility and possibility for both sides to find a new way for China and the US to coexist harmoniously in this world, which will be beneficial for the people of both countries and the international community at large."
