The Philippine Department of Energy is currently drafting a draft nuclear energy bill.
According to a report by the Philippine News Agency on July 9th, the Philippines Department of Energy is soliciting public opinion on a draft notice regarding nuclear energy, aimed at providing additional energy procurement options for distribution companies. Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director Akino stated that the draft notice does not compel power companies to purchase nuclear power, but rather gives them the freedom to choose nuclear energy projects based on their own needs under the "lowest cost" principle of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act. The government plans to expand energy structure and improve energy security through the development of nuclear energy. Akino pointed out that nuclear power has advantages such as zero carbon emissions, supporting economic growth, promoting grid integration, and competitive prices. The notice also paves the way for the upcoming signing of the National Nuclear Energy Security Act, which will establish the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Agency to ensure that nuclear energy development meets safety and security requirements.
