According to Redfin data, the weakening of the Canadian dollar and political disagreements between the US and Canada have dampened the enthusiasm of Canadians for buying homes in the US. Compared to early 2025, there has been a significant decrease in Canadian buyers searching for US properties, when the US had not yet implemented high tariffs on Canada and bilateral relations had not deteriorated. In addition to trade tensions, the continued weakness of the Canadian dollar in the spring of this year has made it even more difficult for Canadians to afford the already expensive US properties. In May of this year, the number of Canadian users searching for US properties on the Redfin website decreased by 26.4% compared to the previous year. Since the White House imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico in February, the search volume for Canadians buying homes in popular US cities has significantly decreased.
