According to a document seen by the media, Alphabet's Google is facing an antitrust complaint from the European Union over its AI Overviews. The complainants are a group of independent publishers who are also requesting interim measures to prevent irreparable damage to them. Google's AI Overviews are artificial intelligence-generated summaries that appear above traditional hyperlinks on relevant webpages, currently being displayed to users in over 100 countries. In May of last year, Google started adding advertisements to AI Overviews. Google is making a major push to integrate artificial intelligence into search results, but this has sparked concerns among content providers such as publishers. The Independent Publishers Alliance filed a complaint to the European Commission on June 30th, accusing Google of abusing its dominance in the online search market. The document states that Google places AI Overviews at the top of regular search engine result pages, which are summaries generated from publisher material, and alleges that Google's positioning practices are detrimental to the original content of publishers.
