On July 5th, Turkish President Erdogan stated that Turkey is closely following the increasingly tense relationship between Russia and Azerbaijan and called on both sides to exercise restraint to avoid escalation. He made the remarks while being interviewed on a special plane on his way back from Azerbaijan to Turkey. Erdogan, in an interview with the International News Agency, said: "Turkey maintains deep diplomatic and strategic relations with both Russia and Azerbaijan." Erdogan further emphasized his hope that recent unpleasant events will not cause "irreversible damage" to the relationship between the two countries, stating: "We call on both countries to exercise restraint." Recently, relations between Russia and Azerbaijan have become tense. Russian authorities in Yekaterinburg have arrested several Azerbaijani expatriates on suspicion of involvement in organized crime groups. Subsequently, Azerbaijani authorities in Baku arrested staff from the "Russian Satellite Communications-Azerbaijan" branch, as well as several Russian IT experts. It is reported that during the arrest process, Russian citizens were subjected to violence.
