AGL Energy announced on Friday that it has acquired the South Australian Virtual Power Plant (SAVPP) from Tesla. The Australian electricity retailer is seeking to increase its battery storage capacity to drive the transition to green energy. This deal comes as AGL works towards its commitment to phase out coal-fired power generation and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2035. The goal is to have a 1.4 gigawatt grid-scale battery storage project in place by next year. SAVPP is one of Australia's largest virtual power plants. AGL will gain access to a network of residential solar and battery systems, consisting of around 7,000 Powerwall home batteries. Additional batteries are expected to be installed later this year.
