AGL Energy announced on Friday that it has acquired the South Australian Virtual Power Plant from Tesla, as the Australian electricity retailer seeks to increase its battery storage capacity to drive the transition to green energy. This deal comes as AGL works towards its commitment to exit coal-fired power generation and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2035, with the goal of a 1.4 gigawatt grid-scale battery storage project next year. SAVPP is one of Australia's largest virtual power plants, and by acquiring SAVPP, AGL will gain a network of residential solar and battery systems consisting of approximately 7,000 Powerwall home batteries, with plans to install more batteries this year.
