The poliovirus has been detected in sewage in several areas of Germany again, increasing the risk of transmission.
The Robert Koch Institute, the federal agency for disease control and prevention in Germany, reported on July 3rd local time that the poliovirus from oral polio vaccine has been detected in sewage samples in multiple cities again recently. Although no related clinical cases or human-to-human transmission have been found within Germany so far, the institute has assessed the possibility of the virus spreading in the population as "increasingly high". According to the Robert Koch Institute, the virus has been detected in sewage samples in cities including Dresden, Mainz, Munich, and Stuttgart for several consecutive weeks. The source of the virus is mainly the attenuated live virus contained in the oral polio vaccine.
