On June 20, 2025, the German Ministry of Economy expressed regret over ArcelorMittal's decision to no longer pursue two key hydrogen steel projects in Germany, which were originally supposed to receive approximately 1.3 billion euros in funding from the German government. The Ministry of Economy stated in an email declaration that the important thing is that no funds have been paid out yet, which means there is no need to reclaim any money. ArcelorMittal stated that due to high energy costs in Germany, they have abandoned their plans to convert the two factories in Germany into carbon-neutral production facilities.
