Disgusted with the Fed cutting interest rates too late, Trump once again criticizes the Fed Chairman.
On June 18th local time, before the Federal Reserve was set to announce its interest rate decision, US President Trump once again criticized Fed Chair Powell, calling him "stupid," "politicized," and saying that the rate cut was "too late". That day, Trump said at the White House that he had repeatedly urged Powell to take action. Trump also said, "Maybe I should go to the Fed myself," and believed that he "could do better than these people".
Powell was nominated as Fed Chair during Trump's first presidential term, officially taking office in February 2018. He was reappointed in May 2022 during the presidency of former President Biden, and his term will end in May 2026. According to relevant laws, after the US president nominates a candidate for Fed Chair, approval from the Senate is required. Trump has criticized Powell multiple times this year and threatened to dismiss him from his position as Fed Chair. Powell stated that as president, Trump does not have the legal authority to dismiss him, and he will continue to work until the end of his term.
