According to the Japanese government, President Trump of the United States and Prime Minister of Japan, Shizuo Kedokoro, held a 30-minute meeting during the G7 Summit. The Japanese government did not provide details on what was discussed, nor did they indicate whether any progress was made in the trade negotiations. The latter is currently a key priority for Japan, as they seek to completely eliminate the tariffs imposed by Trump, including a 25% tariff on key exports in the automotive industry. Kedokoro is attempting to reach a trade agreement with Trump in Alberta, Canada. Returning empty-handed would bring uncertainty to the Japanese economy and cast a shadow over the Prime Minister's political prospects before next month's election. Without an agreement, tariffs could potentially push the country into a technical recession as Japan struggles with inflation.
