According to CNBC, less than two weeks before Elon Musk's planned launch of self-driving taxis in Austin, Texas, protesters in the city are expressing their opposition. Public safety advocates and political protesters are gathering in downtown Austin to express their concerns about Musk's collaboration with the Trump administration. Members of the "Dawn Plan," "Tesla Strike," and "Boycott Austin" organizations are highlighting safety issues with Tesla's partially self-driving systems. Tesla vehicles sold in the United States come equipped with either the standard Autopilot package or the advanced Full Self-Driving (FSD) option. According to data tracked by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicles with these systems (including features like automatic lane-keeping, steering, and parking) have been involved in hundreds of crashes resulting in dozens of fatalities. Earlier this week, Musk showcased Tesla's self-driving taxi in a video on X, featuring an upgraded version of the popular Model Y equipped with the company's future FSD software. This "autonomous" FSD technology for self-driving taxis is not currently available to the public.
