Ecuadorian president announces extension of state of emergency in multiple provinces for 30 days

On June 10th, local time, President of Ecuador Nouvoa issued Executive Order No. 23, declaring that due to continued severe internal unrest, the state of emergency in 7 provinces including Guayas and Los Rios provinces and the capital Quito metropolitan area will be extended for 30 days. The Executive Order states that after the emergency status was implemented for 60 days on April 12th, the threats of attacks, murders, the use of explosives, prison violence, and criminal gangs remain serious. Currently, the joint operation has confiscated over 5,000 lethal weapons, 137 tons of drugs, and 1.4 million gallons of fuel, and has arrested over 6,000 people. The purpose of extending the state of emergency for 30 days is to ensure public order, social peace, and citizen safety, and prevent violent actions by organized armed groups.
