The number of layoffs at American Challenger companies has increased significantly.

The Challenger report in the United States shows that American employers announced layoffs of 93,816 people in May, a 12% decrease from 105,441 in April, and a 47% increase from 63,816 in the same period last year. Andrew Challenger, Senior Vice President of the agency, said, "Tariffs, funding cuts, consumer spending, and overall economic pessimism are putting tremendous pressure on employees. Companies are reducing expenses, slowing down hiring, and issuing layoff notices." As of May this year, employers have announced layoffs of 696,309 people, an 80% increase from 385,859 in the first five months of last year. Compared to the total for the entire year of 2024, there are still 65,049 people short.
