On May 30th, in a local TV program, California Governor Newsom criticized the federal government's "unilateral" and "illegal" tariff policy, believing that it is causing serious consequences to the U.S. economy. Newsom said that several cargo ships have already canceled their port calls at California ports, and the number of incoming cargo ships has significantly decreased. At the same time, container fees have been rising. Newsom also pointed out that recent macroeconomic data shows that the U.S. economy is shrinking. Due to supply chain blockages and shortages, the negative impacts and chaos "completely caused by the U.S. government itself" are worsening, causing catastrophic blows to American small and medium-sized businesses. Previously, on April 16th, Newsom announced that California was suing the Trump administration over tariff issues. California became the first state in the U.S. to sue the Trump administration over tariff issues.
