The Canadian industry strongly opposes Trump's plan to double steel and aluminum tariffs.
On May 30, Canadian media reported that the Canadian industry strongly opposes the US President Trump's plan to double steel and aluminum tariffs. Bev Bruske, President of the Canadian Labour Congress, said that the US government's plan is another direct attack on Canadian workers, and its reckless actions will impact the Canadian economy. Bruske said, "Trump's decision will completely distance us from the US market, bringing a devastating crisis to Canada's steel and aluminum industry, and threatening the jobs of thousands of Canadian workers." Bruske called on the Canadian government to take immediate action to protect workers, including implementing emergency reforms related to employment insurance and wage subsidies. CanCham President and CEO Kandace Lien said in a statement that disrupting the steel and aluminum cross-border supply chain would result in huge losses for both Canada and the US, and doubling the steel and aluminum tariffs to 50% goes against the economic security of North America.
