Determination of Melatonin in Health Foods: National Standard Release

The State Administration for Market Regulation announced that recently, the recommended national standard "Determination of Melatonin in Health Foods" organized by the National Special Food Standardization Technical Committee has been officially released and will be implemented starting October 1, 2025. Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the human pineal gland, which regulates the circadian rhythm and improves the quality of sleep. As a raw material for health food, melatonin is widely used in sleep improvement health food, especially suitable for people whose melatonin secretion decreases due to jet lag, shift work, or aging. The publication of this standard, in conjunction with the "List of Health Food Ingredients - Melatonin," optimizes the scope of application, technical parameters, and operating procedures of detection methods, applicable to various dosage forms such as tablets, soft capsules, granules, powders, oral solutions, gummy candies, etc. The State Administration for Market Regulation will expedite the development of standards for melatonin as a health food ingredient in response to regulatory needs, to promote the quality upgrade of the melatonin health food market.
