On the afternoon of May 23rd local time, South African company Sibanye-Stillwater confirmed that out of the 260 miners trapped underground after an accident at the Kloof gold mine near Johannesburg, there have been no casualties so far, with 79 miners already safely brought to the surface. The remaining 181 miners are still stranded at the underground safety gathering point, where the company continues to provide food and will arrange for their ascent once the safety of the hoisting system is confirmed. The cause of the accident was a malfunction in the mine hoisting equipment. Reporters were not allowed near the accident site, but some of the rescued miners could be seen from the company's perimeter walking towards shuttle buses, appearing tired but in good physical condition.
