The Indonesian Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) issued a statement on May 21 in response to recent rumors about a potential merger between the two major ride-hailing giants Grab and GoTo. KPPU stated that the potential merger is still in the speculation stage, and therefore the agency is unable to evaluate the transaction at this time. As a precautionary measure, KPPU has started conducting independent research to determine the potential impact of the potential merger and develop relevant policy adjustments. KPPU advised business participants to conduct self-assessments to ensure that the transaction does not lead to monopoly behavior and unfair business competition. If any violations are confirmed, KPPU has the authority to take administrative measures, up to canceling the merger transaction.
