Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, stated in an interview with the Financial Times that the United States has a large fiscal deficit that needs to be reduced. Gopinath pointed out that the ratio of debt to gross domestic product in the United States has been continuously increasing. She said, "In the United States, our fiscal policy should be consistent with the goal of gradually reducing the ratio of debt to GDP."
