On Tuesday, Musk confirmed in an interview that Tesla will launch its autonomous taxi service in Austin next month as planned. The company will start with about 10 vehicles and quickly expand to 1,000 within a few months if the initial launch goes smoothly. Musk stated that after introducing autonomous taxis in Austin, Tesla plans to expand to other cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. He predicted that by the end of 2026, there may be over one million autonomous Tesla vehicles in the United States. However, as early as 2019, Musk had mentioned that Tesla could have over one million robot taxis by the end of that year. Musk admitted that punctuality is not his strong suit.
