Spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, Chen Binhua, answers questions from reporters.
Spokesperson Chen Bin of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council answered questions from reporters about the content related to cross-strait relations in the speeches of the leaders of the Taiwan region in recent times.
Question: The leader of the Taiwan region delivered a speech on the first anniversary of his inauguration today and then accepted media interviews. Before this, he had also given interviews to several media outlets. What is the Taiwan Affairs Office's comment on the content related to cross-strait relations in the recent speeches of the leader of the Taiwan region?
The split of "Taiwan independence" and the guarantee of peace in the Taiwan Strait are irreconcilable. Confrontation and dialogue are diametrically opposed. Only when the provocative actions seeking "independence" are stopped, can there be room for improvement in cross-strait relations; only by strengthening cross-strait exchanges and cooperation can the tense situation in the Taiwan Strait be eased; only by recognizing that both sides belong to the same China can there be a basis for cross-strait negotiations and dialogue.
In recent speeches, the leader of the Taiwan region has, on the one hand, maintained the position of "Taiwan independence" and the mistaken path of "relying on foreign support for independence" and "seeking independence through force", hyping up the "threat from the mainland", perpetuating the false narrative of "democracy against authoritarianism", stirring up confrontation between the two sides of the strait, promoting economic decoupling between the two sides of the strait, advancing the "17 strategies to respond", and obstructing and limiting cross-strait exchanges and cooperation; on the other hand, he has made insincere gestures, claiming that he is willing to engage in communication and cooperation with the mainland on the premise of "equal dignity", attempting to restore cross-strait dialogue on the basis of the "one country, two systems" principle. This two-faced approach is devoid of new ideas, futile, and doomed to fail.
No matter what the leader of the Taiwan region says or how he says it, it cannot change the fact that Taiwan is part of China, nor can it change the direction and pace of the development of cross-strait relations, and it cannot stop the historical trend of the motherland ultimately achieving reunification. We will fully implement the overall strategy of the party in solving the Taiwan issue in the new era, adhere to the one-China principle and the "1992 Consensus", unite the broad masses of compatriots in Taiwan, resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence" and external interference. Based on the one-China principle, we are willing to engage in dialogue and communication with various political parties, groups, and individuals in Taiwan on political issues and advancing the process of national reunification, actively expand cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, continuously deepen the integration and development across the strait, and work together to create a beautiful future for national reunification and national rejuvenation.
