The Conference Board Leading Economic Index for the United States declined in April.
According to the Conference Board, the Leading Economic Index for the United States experienced a decline in April. The data released shows that the index fell by 1% to 99.4, which is lower than economists' expectations and also the largest drop in the index in two years. Conference Board analyst Justyna Zabinska-La Monica said, "Since January 2025, consumer expectations have become increasingly pessimistic month by month, and the contributions of building permits and average manufacturing workweek turned negative in April. When looking at the six-month trend of the components of the LEI, there is also a general weakness, which is a warning signal for growth."
