Preliminary statistics released by the Romanian election authorities early on the 19th revealed that independent candidate and current Bucharest mayor Nicuor Dan won the second round of the presidential election held on the 18th. According to the election authorities, with 99.24% of the votes counted, Dan received 53.99% of the votes, while the chairman of the Romanian People's Unity Party, George Simion, received 46.01% of the votes, with a difference of nearly 8 percentage points between the two. Dan's victory is now certain.
