The number of births in Brazil hits a record low for the fifth consecutive year.
The latest population statistics released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics on the 16th local time showed that the number of births in Brazil in 2023 was at its lowest level since systematic records began in 1976. The data shows that the number of registered births nationwide in Brazil in 2023 was approximately 2.52 million, a decrease of about 0.8% from the 2022 figure, marking the fifth consecutive year of decline. The data also shows that in 2023, 39% of women in Brazil gave birth to children at the age of over 30, compared to 23.9% in 2003. According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, as of July 1, 2024, the total population of Brazil is approximately 213 million; it is estimated to peak at 220 million in 2041, and then decline starting from 2042.
