TSMC: This year will build 9 new factories globally, with a new wafer fab in Taichung by the end of the year.
On May 15, the Deputy General Manager of Operations at TSMC, Zhang Zongsheng, stated at a technical forum that TSMC plans to build an average of 3 new factories per year from 2017 to 2020, and an average of 5 new factories per year from 2021 to 2024. This year, they plan to accelerate their pace even further, with plans to build a total of 9 new factories globally, including 8 wafer fabs and 1 advanced packaging plant. Zhang Zongsheng revealed that both the 20th wafer fab in Hsinchu and the 22nd wafer fab in Kaohsiung will be the production bases for 2-nanometer technology, with construction set to begin in 2022 and production planned to start this year. The 25th wafer fab in Taichung will begin construction at the end of this year, with plans to produce even more advanced technology than 2 nanometers by 2028.
