Canada's newly appointed Prime Minister is positioning the country as an energy superpower and is poised to restart oil pipelines both to the east and west.
Canadian Prime Minister Kenny stated on Tuesday that he is willing to amend federal regulations that hinder the construction of energy projects and the utilization of natural resources. Kenny reiterated that as long as there is consensus nationwide, he will push for the construction of west-to-east oil pipelines, positioning Canada as an energy superpower, including but not limited to oil and gas production. As Kenny made energy commitments, the resource-rich province of Alberta is considering holding a referendum next year to secede from Canada. The provincial premier has stated that she is against separation from the federal government, but residents are angry and frustrated with the federal environmental policies under former Prime Minister Trudeau, which have hindered the region's economic prospects. One of the main complaints in the province is the lack of a transnational pipeline to transport oil from western Canada to eastern ports. TC Energy had plans to construct one, but the project was ultimately canceled due to political opposition.
