The European Union Court ruled that the European Commission's refusal to disclose the text messages between its president Ursula von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic was incorrect. Earlier, journalists requested to see the messages exchanged between von der Leyen and Bourla before Pfizer and the EU reached a multi-billion euro vaccine agreement. This decision could have a significant impact on the transparency and accountability of the EU and could greatly damage von der Leyen's reputation. The EU General Court stated in a statement that the European Commission "failed to reasonably explain why it believed that the exchanged messages during the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines did not contain important information or involved subsequent information that must be ensured to be retained."
