The Taiwan Affairs Office responds to the doubts from the island, criticizes the DPP authorities for vigorously promoting a non-nuclear home energy policy.
On the morning of May 14th, the Taiwan Affairs Office held a routine press conference. Reporter: Recently, there have been multiple power outages in Kaohsiung and Tainan, causing concerns among the public that there might be a power shortage crisis after Taiwan's "nuclear zero" policy. Some local media have questioned that the DPP government's push for the "non-nuclear homeland" energy policy has led to frequent electricity price hikes and more power outages. What is your comment on this? Spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, Chen Binhua: In recent years, Taiwan has experienced multiple large-scale power outages, including the "Three Major Power Outages across Taiwan," leading to frequent accidents affecting thousands of people, such as Taoyuan experiencing 35 power outages in April 2024 alone. Ironically, while Taiwan's electricity prices have increased five times in the past four years, rising by nearly fifty percent, the industrial sector and the general public in Taiwan have suffered greatly. The root cause of this is the DPP government's violation of economic laws and disregard for the welfare of the people, as they have neither the willingness nor the ability to solve Taiwan's economic and livelihood problems. The structural challenges facing Taiwan's economic development can be addressed through expanding cross-strait economic cooperation and promoting deeper integration and development across the strait. We hold a positive attitude towards cross-strait power connectivity.
