Apple ventures into the field of brain-machine interfaces, making it possible to control the iPhone with thoughts.
According to media reports, Apple is delving into research on brain-machine interface technology and collaborating with the startup company Synchron to explore the possibility of controlling devices such as iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro through brain signals. This cutting-edge technology is expected to bring a whole new way of interaction for paralyzed patients and individuals with limited mobility. Synchron is a company that produces a stent-like implant called "Stentrode". The device contains 16 electrodes and is implanted in the brain's motor cortex blood vessels through the neck vein, forming a mesh electrode array. It can capture the brain's movement intention signals and transmit them wirelessly to external devices, enabling control without the need for hand operations. Synchron integrates this system with Apple's switch control function to replace the input method. In one trial, Mark, a 64-year-old patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, successfully used the brain-machine interface device implanted by Synchron to control the Apple Vision Pro headset using his mind. He was able to play card games, watch Apple TV shows, and send text messages using only brain signals without gestures or voice commands.
