On the 8th, Shaanxi experienced a large-scale severe convective weather, with hail occurring in many places. Some netizens believe that the hail was caused by artificial rain enhancement operations conducted that morning. However, relevant meteorological experts have denied this. On the 9th, chief forecaster Yao Jing of the Shaanxi Provincial Meteorological Observatory told reporters that hail is a natural phenomenon that occurs in severe convective weather, requiring conditions such as strong updrafts in the clouds, the combination of supercooled water droplets and hail embryos. If there is a lot of moisture in the clouds at this time, the hail embryos will capture the moisture in the clouds, causing them to grow continuously and eventually form hail. The core of artificial rain enhancement is to catalyze natural precipitation, rather than change the dynamic structure within the clouds. Artificial rain enhancement operations not only do not cause hail, but on the contrary, if catalysts are excessively sprayed, they can to a certain extent inhibit the rapid growth of hail embryos, thereby reducing the likelihood of hail formation or avoiding the continuous growth of hail.
