Federal Reserve Chairman Powell: Not all companies can increase prices due to tariffs.
Federal Reserve Chairman Powell said that not all companies can raise prices to offset the cost of tariffs, and he warned that after years of inflation, consumer tolerance is low. "What I hear from retailers is that consumers are tight on money," Powell said. "This means that passing on prices to consumers is not as easy as you might imagine." Powell still believes that the U.S. economy is in good shape. He added that consumer spending and business investment remain solid. He pointed out that although consumer confidence indicators are significantly weak, this has not yet affected spending. Powell said he is considering whether tariffs will slow down economic growth to the extent of restraining inflation. He said that this was the experience of 2008, but it did not happen at other times.
