Several listed banks experienced slower growth in personal loans in the first quarter compared to their overall loan growth, with three commercial banks seeing a decrease in personal loan balances.
According to journalists who have reviewed multiple first-quarter reports from listed banks that disclosed personal loan project data, a commonality emerged: in the first quarter, the growth rate of personal loan balances at China Construction Bank, Bank of Communications, China Merchants Bank, CITIC Bank, Ping An Bank, Industrial Bank, and Minsheng Bank was lower than the growth rate of total bank loans during the same period. The loan growth of these banks was mainly driven by corporate business. Specifically, as of the end of the first quarter, China Construction Bank's personal loan balance was 9.04 trillion yuan, an increase of 1.87% from the end of the previous year, lower than the 8.16% increase in corporate loans and the 4.73% increase in total bank loans. As of the end of the first quarter, Bank of Communications' personal loan balance was 2.79 trillion yuan, an increase of 1.28% from the end of the previous year, lower than the 5.19% increase in corporate loans and the 4.24% increase in total bank loans. As of the end of the first quarter, China Merchants Bank's retail loans were 3.66 trillion yuan, with a growth rate of only 0.38% from the end of the previous year. Meanwhile, China Merchants Bank's total loans and advances at the same period were 7.13 trillion yuan, an increase of 3.44% from the end of the previous year. As of the end of the first quarter, CITIC Bank's personal loan balance was 1.88 trillion yuan, an increase of 0.52% from the end of the previous year. Meanwhile, CITIC Bank's total loans and advances at the same period were 5.866027 trillion yuan, an increase of 2.55% from the end of the previous year.
