Source: Insider: Trump urges House Speaker to raise the highest tax rate.
According to sources, President Trump urged House Speaker Johnson in a phone call on Wednesday to increase the highest tax rate in the upcoming legislation and close loopholes for the estate tax. The call comes as the Republican-controlled House is pushing the president's legislative agenda, which aims to extend the favorable policies for businesses and individuals introduced in Trump's 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, while also eliminating taxes on tips, overtime pay, and social security benefits. Johnson and other Republican leaders are currently resisting the proposal to raise taxes on the wealthy. Treasury Secretary Benson explicitly stated to reporters last week that Trump had ruled out this idea. However, the Republican Party is still facing pressure from MAGA supporters to limit tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations. Jason Smith, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, revealed in a recent interview that his tax legislative body may take action to end tax loopholes benefiting the wealthy.
