Detroit's automakers took aim at the trade agreement reached between Trump and the UK on Thursday, arguing that the agreement should take priority over the deals with Canada and Mexico. "Under this agreement, importing a British car with almost no American parts will be cheaper than importing a car from Mexico or Canada with half of its parts coming from the US and meeting the USMCA standards," said Matt Blunt, chairman of the American Automotive Policy Council. The council represents Ford, GM, and the parent company of Jeep, Stellantis. "This harms the interests of American automakers, suppliers, and auto workers." The US-UK agreement reduces the tariff on the first 100,000 British-made cars imported to the US from 25% to 10%, a move welcomed by the British automotive industry including manufacturers like Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin. "We hope that this preferential treatment for British cars compared to North American cars does not set a precedent for future negotiations with Asian and European competitors," Blunt said.
