Jerome Powell, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, is expected to act cautiously at this afternoon's press conference, maintaining a similar tone to his last press conference in March, according to economist Thomas Simmons of J. P. Morgan. Simmons expressed sympathy for the hardworking members of the Fed's news team, writing, "It is difficult to imagine them coming up with questions about monetary policy or the economic outlook that Powell can and is willing to answer directly." Concerns about inflation caused by tariffs persist, but aside from that, Simmons wrote, "We see the Fed's view on its dual mandate as relatively balanced, and if economic growth and labor market prospects deteriorate significantly, the Fed's ability to provide policy support will not be limited."
