Including British Vodafone, German Telekom, French Orange, and Italian Telecommunication, the 12 largest telecommunications companies in Europe jointly signed a letter requesting the European Union regulatory agency to allocate the entire 6GHz high-frequency spectrum for mobile communication networks and warning that Europe may fall behind the United States in future 6G deployments. The letter points out that if the EU delays the allocation of the 6GHz high-frequency spectrum to European mobile communication operators, American technology stakeholders may be allowed to obtain more 6GHz spectrum capacity, threatening Europe's competitiveness. The 6GHz high-frequency band is one of the few remaining large blocks of mid-frequency spectrum, with most European countries already auctioning off the 3.4-3.8GHz spectrum range for initial 5G deployments. The EU Radio Spectrum Policy Group is expected to release a draft opinion on the 6GHz band next month for public consultation.
