Spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce answers questions on the China-US high-level economic and trade talks. A reporter asked: On the morning of May 7, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Vice Premier He Lifeng will visit Switzerland from May 9 to 12 for talks with the US. Can the Ministry of Commerce introduce the background and considerations of this meeting? Since the new US government came to power, it has taken a series of unfair and unjust unilateral tariff measures, severely impacting the China-US economic and trade relationship, seriously disrupting the international economic and trade order, and posing severe challenges to global economic recovery and growth. China has taken resolute and strong countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights and interests. Recently, the US has continuously aired messages about adjusting tariff measures and actively conveyed information to China through various channels, hoping to engage in discussions with China on tariff issues. China has seriously evaluated the information from the US. Based on considerations of global expectations, Chinese interests, calls from the US business community and consumers, China has decided to agree to engage with the US. Vice Premier He Lifeng, as the lead person for China in economic and trade matters, will hold talks with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen during his visit to Switzerland. China's position remains consistent whether in conflict or negotiation, China's determination to defend its own development interests will not change, and its stance and goal of upholding international fairness, justice, and the economic and trade order will not change. China is willing to engage in dialogue to solve issues, and negotiations must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect, equal consultation, and mutual benefit. China has a saying, "listen to what is said, but observe what is done." If the US wants to resolve issues through negotiations, they must address the serious negative impacts of their unilateral tariff measures on themselves and the world, acknowledge international economic and trade rules, fairness and justice, and heed rational voices from all sectors. They must show sincerity in their negotiations, correct their mistaken practices, and work towards a mutual resolution of concerns with China through equal consultation. If the US employs double standards, deception, coercion, or extortion in negotiations, China will not agree and will not compromise its principles and international fairness and justice to seek any agreement. China notes that some economies are also negotiating with the US. It is important to emphasize that appeasement does not bring peace, and compromise without respect for principles and fairness is not the correct way to defend one's interests. Despite changes in the international landscape, China will continue to steadfastly open up, uphold the multilateral trading system centered around the WTO, and share development opportunities with countries around the world. China is willing to work with all parties to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, enhance communication and coordination, jointly resist unilateral protectionism and hegemonic bullying, uphold free trade and multilateralism, and promote the construction of an inclusive and beneficial global economic system.
