New Zealand is considering banning teenagers under the age of 16 from using social media.
1 m ago
On May 6th, according to The Guardian, members of the National Party in New Zealand proposed a bill that would ban the use of social media by teenagers under the age of 16. The "Social Media Age Appropriate Users Bill" would require social media companies to verify that users are at least 16 years old before allowing them to register, or face fines of up to 2 million New Zealand dollars (approximately 1.2 million US dollars). Currently, New Zealand does not have laws requiring social media platforms to implement age verification measures. The bill is based on Australia's law passed in 2024 that prohibits teenagers under 16 from creating social media accounts. In a landmark move last November, Australia implemented one of the world's strictest bans on Facebook, Instagram, and other popular websites for teenagers under 16.
