Romanian Prime Minister resigns, Social Democratic Party withdraws from ruling coalition.
The Social Democratic Party of Romania announced on the 5th that they are withdrawing from the ruling coalition, and their Prime Minister, Jolocu, announced his resignation. Jolocu stated that the Romanian ruling coalition was established in December last year with two goals: to ensure government stability and select a candidate who could win the Romanian presidential election, but one of these goals has not been achieved. The preliminary results of the first round of the Romanian presidential election indicate that the current ruling coalition lacks legitimacy. The initial vote count results of the presidential election show that the ruling coalition candidate, Clin Anton Popescu, ranked third by a small margin and did not advance to the second round of voting. Jolocu stated that Social Democratic Party members currently serving as ministers in the government will discuss whether to temporarily remain in their positions within the coalition. He also mentioned that the Social Democratic Party will not support any candidate in the second round of the election.
